Top-ranked Texans set to host #18 Odessa Monday night

LEVELLAND—The top-ranked South Plains College men's basketball team will return to the friendly confines of the Texan Dome for the first time since Dec. 3 for a pivotal WJCAC conference showdown with the #18 Odessa College Wranglers at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 9.

The Texans will enter the contest sporting an unblemished 14-0 record including a 2-0 record in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. The Texans are fresh off a 4-0 stint in Arizona where they captured the 2016 Fiesta Bowl Junior College Shootout title for the second time in as many years.

South Plains picked up their second top 15 victory in the desert when they downed #12 Salt Lake Community College 85-69 on Dec. 29, before eventually going on to defeat Snow College 85-65 in the championship round.

By the numbers:

The Texans enter Monday's contest averaging 100.1 points per game. South Plains is shooting 52 percent from the field and 40.6 percent from beyond the arc. The Texans are a guard-oriented team, yet still manage to average 41.1 rebounds per game. Selfishness is not a common trend for the Texans as they currently average 19.6 assists per game.

About the Wranglers:

Odessa enters Monday with a 12-2 season record and currently 2-0 in conference play. The Wranglers average 96.6 points per game and are shooting 52 percent from the floor. Sophomore Sammy Barnes-Thompkins leads the Wranglers in scoring with 15.1 points per game. Marlon Hunter is boasting a 13.9 points per game average, while Tyree Robinson currently averages 13.3 points per game.

A season ago:

The Texans split the series 1-1 with the Wranglers last season. Odessa protected their home court with a 63-62 win over the Texans last season on Jan. 7, before falling to South Plains 71-63 on Feb. 4 at the Texan Dome.
