News mentions
HUTCHINSON, KA. — Jordan Brangers made the shot countless times. Unaccompanied inside the 3,300 seat arena known as the Texan Dome adjacent Levelland, Texas. National Championship banners hovering above as his sole witness. Shot – after shot – after shot. The Sophomore from Radcliff, Kentucky prepped himself for the opportunity to keep the Texans' dreams of a third NJCAA Division I National Title a reality.
HUTCHINSON, Kansas—Jordan Brangers scored 18 points and Jahlil Tripp chipped in 14 points and hauled in 10 boards as the second-seeded South Plains College Texans downed the No. 15 seed Panola College Ponies 88-84 on Tuesday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena in the second round of the 2017 NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball National Tournament. "I was able to hit a few shots to start off the game and kind of got cold there going into the second half," Brangers said. "Panola is a very good team and they were face-guarding me basically the entire game. I was able to hit some shots late in the second half and kind of got going for us."
WOLFFORTH—Small setback for a major comeback. Despite a 49 percent shooting mark, the top-ranked South Plains College Texans fell to Western Texas 82-74 in the semifinal round of the NJCAA Region V Tournament on Friday night at the Tiger Pit. Jahlil Tripp led the Texans with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting over 31 minutes. Josh Webster recorded 17 points, four assists and two blocks for South Plains. Leading scorer Jordan Brangers was held to a season-low eight points, attempting just nine shots in 31 minutes. The Texans were forced into a season-high 23 turnovers and shot just 50 percent from the charity stripe in the contest.
WOLFFORTH—Grantham Gillard liked his chances. With Hill College dead-set on stopping the Texans' dynamic offensive attack and shutting down the likes of leading scorer Jordan Brangers, something had to give – And it did. Gillard scored 13 points in the second half knocking down a trio of 3-pointers within a six minute span as the top-ranked South Plains College Texans downed the Rebels 100-78 in the opening round of the Region V Tournament at the Tiger Pit.
LEVELLAND—The top-ranked South Plains College Texans placed four players in double figures en route to a 93-62 dismantling of Clarendon College on Thursday night at the Texan Dome. Jordan Brangers led all scorers with 26 points as the Radcliff, Kentucky native went 8-of-13 from the 3-point line over 23 minutes. Roberto Gallinat went 4-of-8 from the field finishing with 15 points while Shawntrez Davis and Greg Shead each scored 11.
BIG SPRING—That's a wrap. The top-ranked South Plains College Texans rode Roberto Gallinat's 19-point performance to a 71-51 victory over Howard College on Monday night at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum to improve to 26-0 overall and 14-0 in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. Is wasn't the only victory for the Texans on Monday night as No. 18 Odessa fell to Western Texas 77-75, knocking the Wranglers out of contention for a split of the conference crown and allowing the Texans to officially take claim to the title of 2016-2017 WJCAC conference champions.
LEVELLAND—If you plan on asking South Plains men's basketball coach Steve Green how he navigates away from feeling pressure when taking to the hardwood, you should come prepared to defend such question. For a Hall of Fame coach who has amassed over 400 wins and two national titles during his 17-year tenure heading up the South Plains College program, coach Green still brings that 'next game is the most important game of the season' mentality with him when the lights come on in the arena.
ODESSA—Josh Webster recorded a career-high 23 points while Jordan Brangers went 7-of-11 from the floor chipping in 20 points as the No. 1 South Plains College Texans improved to 23-0 on the year and 11-0 in the WJCAC with a 93-80 road win over No. 14 Odessa on Thursday night. Thursday's victory extends South Plains' conference lead over Odessa to two games with five games remaining in conference play. "Odessa is a very good team and we knew this was a big game for us," said Webster who was 9-of-12 shooting from the field and also dished out six assists. "It didn't matter how we did it, all we wanted to do was win this game. Anytime you have the top two teams in the conference, you know you're going to get their best game. We just tried to lock in and get the win."
BORGER—Jordan Brangers scored 23 points and freshman Jahlil Tripp recorded 14 points and 10 boards as the No. 1 South Plains College Texans routed Frank Phillips College 90-61 on Monday night to improve to 22-0 on the year and 10-0 in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. "We knew we had to set the tone and couldn't take them lightly," Brangers said. "We came out and executed our game plan. They play a two-three zone and extended it a little bit every time I got the ball. They stayed on me pretty good, but I was still able to hit some shots and help out my team. Coach Green let us know that tonight was a statement game, and if we didn't win tonight it would hurt us come Thursday's game against Odessa."
LEVELLAND—Raquan Mitchell scored a career-high 26 points while Jordan Brangers bucketed 21 as the No. 1 South Plains College Texans improved to 21-0 on the season and 9-0 in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference following an 112-87 dismantling of Midland College on Thursday night at the Texan Dome. "I didn't play very well last game and I was just trying to get my groove back," Mitchell said. "My teammates helped me a lot tonight. Josh and Jordan were really sharing the ball and getting everyone involved. We had a huge crowd tonight and we felt their support tonight. We didn't want to start out slow and have to fight our way back. We wanted to start fast tonight."
SNYDER—Roberto Gallinat could sense his team was one shot away. Trailing for the majority of the second half, Gallinat rose up from beyond the arc. Not once – not twice – but three times as the sophomore guard from Atlanta connected on a trio of 3s, the final one coming with 1:50 left in regulation to erase a nine-point deficit and give the Texans their first lead of the second half, 85-83. "I've been here before, and I just tried to keep calm for my teammates," Gallinat said. "I felt like we were a little rattled, and I just got a great pass and was able to finish the play. That's a good team, and it felt like they didn't miss a shot. When we got the lead, we knew we were going to have to keep pushing forward."
LEVELLAND—The top-ranked South Plains College Texans rode Jordan Brangers' 30-point performance to a 93-72 win over Howard College on Thursday night at the Texan Dome to improve to 18-0 on the season and 6-0 in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. Brangers went 10-for-19 from the field and 8-of-15 from beyond the arc in 30 minutes of action, while Josh Webster closed out the game with 10 points, eight boards and eight assists for South Plains. ROSWELL, N.M.—Jahlil Tripp scored 17 points and hauled in 12 rebounds to lead the No. 1 South Plains College Texans past New Mexico Military Institute 67-48 on Monday night. "We had a few mishaps on offense and weren't playing our type of basketball early in the game," Tripp said. "I just tried to come out and play tough and play with heart and let my teammates trust me to make the right plays. Coach Green is always telling us that if our shots aren't falling go find another way to win. We did that tonight on defense, and we know we can do other things besides just shoot 3s."
HOBBS, N.M.—Jordan Brangers scored 24 points and Grantham Gillard chipped in 17 as the No. 1 South Plains College Texans pummeled the New Mexico Junior College Thunderbirds 105-60 on Thursday night at the Caster Activity Center. "I was able to hit my first basket on my first possession with a jab step and a 3, and I knew it'd be a pretty good night," Brangers said. "New Mexico is a good team, especially when you're playing at their place. Coach Green preached all week that it was going to be tough going down there to play. When you go down there and beat them by 40-plus, it's a really nice statement game for us."
