Texans Fall To Midland

MIDLAND—The South Plains College Texans fell to the Midland Chaparrals 70-62 on Thursday night in Midland.

The Texans were lead in scoring by sophomore Che Bob who finished the game with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Justice Green had 13 points and six boards for the Texans. Roberto Gaillinat went 3-for-5 from the 3-point line and finished with nine points for South Plains (15-7), and Marlon Jones chipped in eight points and hauled in six rebounds.

Midland's Jachai Simmons led all scorers with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Solomon Hainna and Travan Coad each scored 11. Norbertus Giga and Bryce Ervin each finished with nine points for the Chaps, and Deashon Francis had seven.

South Plains found itself trailing by 16 points after the first 20 minutes, but answered back in the second half and trimmed the Chaps' lead to five late in the second frame. The Texans out-rebounded the Chaps 48-43 on the glass and received 30 points off the bench.

The Texans would utilize a full-court press throughout the final 20 minutes of regulation, which gave Midland (18-5, 6-3) trouble several times throughout the remainder of the contest. Midland was the beneficiary of nearly double the free-throw attempts than that of South Plains, which gave the Chaps a 17-7 advantage come games end.

Now 6-3 in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference, the Texans will return home on Monday, February 1 when they host Frank Phillips in a pivotal conference matchup for each team. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
