Henderson tabbed conference MVP; Green named Coach of the Year

LEVELLAND - South Plains College sharpshooter Marshall Henderson was recently named Most Valuable Player of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC), leading a list of four Texans who earned recognition for helping their team to a No. 1 ranking, WJCAC and Region 5 championships, as well as an undefeated 32-0 season heading into the NJCAA National tournament in Hutchinson, Kan.

Henderson, a 6-foot-2 guard from Hurst, Texas led the WJCAC in scoring with 19.4 points per game. During the season he nailed 115-of-269 (.428) 3-point attempts, many of which were several feet behind the line and under stiff pressure from defenders.

Henderson was also named to the All-Region 5 team and has recently committed to play for the University of Mississippi next season.

Yanick Moreira joins Henderson as an All-WJCAC and Region 5 selection. Moreira's presence under the basket forced opponents to take less than ideal shots to avoid the wrath of the 6-foot-11 shot blocker who had a league high 2.13 blocks per game. Moreira also averaged more than 12 points and seven rebounds per game.

Sophomore Stanton Kidd, a 6-foot-7 forward from Baltimore, Md., was the third Texan named to the All-Conference list. The North Carolina Central University signee scored just less than 12 points per contest and pulled down nearly seven boards per game.

Freshman Devonte Smith led the Texans in assists and minutes played while running the offense as the team's point guard. Smith was named to the All-WJCAC Honorable Mention team after playing nearly 31 minutes per game (32-minutes in conference) and posting an assist/turnover ratio of nearly 4-1.

Texan head coach Steve Green was named WJCAC Coach of the Year for his efforts in guiding the Texans to an undefeated record. His team will next play in the NJCAA National tournament held March 20-24 at the Hutchinson Sports Arena in Hutchinson, Kan.

South Plains will face East Mississippi Community College (23-4) in the first round of the tournament at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 20. KLVT radio will carry a live audio feed of the action on KLVT 1230 AM. Live video of every NJCAA game will be presented by NJCAA TV and can be found at www.njcaa.org.
