Roger Reding - Director of Athletics, South Plains College

Roger Reding enters his 10th year as Director of Athletics at South Plains College, continuing to lead one of the most dominant athletic programs in the NJCAA. Under his leadership, SPC has captured five consecutive Men’s Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, four Men’s Indoor National Championships, two Men’s Basketball Regional Championships, two Women’s Basketball Regional Championships, and numerous WJCAC titles in both men’s and women’s basketball. The college also remains a national contender in rodeo, consistently qualifying student-athletes for the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in Casper, Wyoming.

The 2024–2025 athletic year further solidified SPC’s national reputation. Both the Texan and Lady Texan basketball teams earned NJCAA National Tournament appearances, continuing their tradition of postseason excellence. The Texan track and field program added to its storied history by sweeping both the Indoor and Outdoor Men’s National Championships, extending one of the most impressive championship streaks in junior college athletics. In rodeo, SPC again shined on the national stage, sending multiple athletes to compete at the CNFR in Wyoming, where they represented the college among the nation’s elite.

Since his appointment in September 2016, Reding has overseen an era of unparalleled success across all programs. In his first season, SPC’s men’s track and field team secured their 11th straight outdoor national title, while the Lady Texan rodeo team won their second consecutive WJCAC crown. That same year, the Texan basketball team held the No. 1 national ranking for 16 straight weeks and finished third at the NJCAA National Tournament, while the Lady Texans advanced to the NJCAA Sweet 16. In 2018, the Texans claimed the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship, the program’s third, with a thrilling 98–95 victory over Southern Idaho.

A native of Whitharral, Texas, Reding began his journey at South Plains College as a student-athlete before earning his degree from Texas Tech University. His coaching career includes serving as an assistant women’s basketball coach at SPC, head boys’ and girls’ coach at Whitharral High School, and assistant coach for the Texas Tech Lady Raiders, where he helped guide the team to 16 NCAA Tournaments, 11 Sweet Sixteens, four Elite Eights, and the 1993 NCAA National Championship. He also spent time as an assistant coach and director of player personnel for the Chicago Sky of the WNBA.

Succeeding longtime athletic director Joe Tubb, who led SPC to 42 NJCAA championships, Reding has upheld and expanded that legacy. His commitment to excellence ensures that South Plains College remains among the nation’s premier two-year athletic programs, known for producing champions on the field, in the arena, and in the classroom.

“Not many people get to come back to a place they truly love,” Reding said. “South Plains College, Levelland, and junior college athletics have always meant so much to me. Our goal is to compete for national championships and uphold the winning tradition that defines this program.”
