LANCE BINGHAM – INDUCTED 2016 - HALL OF FAME
Lance Bingham’s relationship with South Plains College began in 1981 when he arrived on campus as a talented track and field student-athlete. Competing for the Texans, Bingham became one of the top multi-event performers in the nation, earning two NJCAA national runner-up finishes in the decathlon and recording a personal-best score of 7,510 points. After his standout SPC career, he transferred to Texas Tech University, where he continued competing in track and field as well as football before graduating in 1985.
Following coaching stops at Campbell University and Springlake-Earth High School, Bingham returned to South Plains College as an assistant track and field coach from 1991–1993. He then went back to his alma mater, Meadow High School, serving as head coach for football, track, and cross country from 1993–1995, before accepting an assistant track and field coaching position at Liberty University. He remained at Liberty from 1995–2001, helping elevate the Flames’ national profile.
In 2001, Bingham returned once again to Levelland—this time as the head track and field coach at South Plains College. His tenure became one of the most successful coaching eras in SPC history. Under his leadership, the Texans and Lady Texans produced 13 individual national champions and 33 All-Americans, won the NJCAA Marathon Championship, and earned Bingham recognition as the 2004 NJCAA Coach of the Year.
After his highly successful run at SPC, Bingham returned to Liberty University in 2004, serving as Associate Head Coach for 11 seasons and contributing significantly to the program’s continued rise on the national stage. In 2015, he returned to Texas to become the head track and field coach at Abilene Christian University.
For his lifelong dedication to track and field, his outstanding coaching achievements, and his lasting impact on South Plains College, Lance Bingham was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 2016.
