CLYDE NEFF – INDUCTED 1998 - TRACK & FIELD

When Clyde Neff first stepped onto the South Plains College campus in 1988, few could have foreseen the 17½-year journey he would forge with SPC—or the national and international reputation he would earn through his work with the National Junior College Athletic Association. During his time at South Plains, Neff became deeply involved with NJCAA athletics, dedicating himself to cross country as well as indoor and outdoor track and field.

Recognized as one of the nation’s premier track and field officials—especially in the combined events of the decathlon, heptathlon, and pentathlon—Neff quickly became the person meet organizers relied upon for consistency, precision, and professionalism. In 1991, he became the official voice of the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, further cementing his role as a trusted leader on the national stage.

Among his many accomplishments, Neff’s most meaningful contributions may have come through education and championship administration. Working closely with South Plains College, he helped the institution host three NJCAA Cross Country Championships, embracing the opportunity not only to run exceptional events but also to teach and mentor others in the process. He also played a key role in the NJCAA Marathon Championships during his tenure at SPC.

Neff’s expertise eventually carried him onto one of the world’s grandest stages. In 1996, he and three fellow South Plains College faculty and staff members were selected to serve at the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta—an honor that affirmed his standing in the sport.

Clyde Neff’s legacy is one of service, leadership, and a profound dedication to the advancement of track and field at every level.
