
VERNON, TX — The South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams qualified 10 athletes for the finals of the Vernon College Rodeo Saturday, including Brey Yore who won the calf roping event title and led the Texans to a fourth place overall finish.
Yore posted an 8.7 in the long round and an 8.3 in the finals, finishing with a 17.0 average and 175 points. Nathan Clawson made the finals in calf roping, going 9.2 in the long round and 11.0 in the finals, posting a 20.2 average.
Kreece Dearing added 30 points in steer wrestling, running a 9.1 in the long round and a 5.9 in the finals, placing sixth. Zaran Kirkpatrick led the women's team with a fourth place finish in goat tying, running a 7.7 in the long round and an 8.4 in the finals, totaling 100 points. Georgia Shields and Kallie Montalvo placed eighth and ninth respectively in goat tying, as Shields was eighth with a 20.5 average, and Montalvo was ninth with a 20.6 average.
South Plains' Katie Bews was eighth in breakaway roping, going 3.9 in the long round, but missed in the finals. Gus Kelley and Birch Eiguren placed sixth in team roping, as the pair turned in a 5.9 in the long round and a 15.7 in the finals, totaling 35 points. John Hisel added 25 points in team roping (heeler), placing ninth on the weekend.
The Texans finished with 205 points, while the Lady Texans also placed fourth in the team standings with 133.33 points.
