Tisalema, Benahmed lead South Plains with top finishes at New Mexico Junior College Cross Country Invitational

HOBBS — Alsion Tisalema won the women's 5k and Hamdani Benahmed won the men's 8k Friday at the New Mexico Junior College Cross Country Invitational at Harry McAdams Park.

Tisalema posted an 18:49.3, with a 6:03.5 average mile to lead the Lady Texans, while Destinee Perez placed 32nd in 22:30.1. Benahmed went 24:22.0 with an average mile of 4:54.1, while Divan Du Plooy was third in the 8k with a time of 24:44.0. South Plains Tamer Sakar placed 13th, clocking a 26:20.9.

"This was the first time Hamdani has run an 8k, and he's been battling some sickness over the past week or so, for him to come out and win this race shows his dedication and the work he has put in this season," South Plains cross country coach Takieddine Hedeilli said. "Alison was able to stay in the fourth position, make a push, and get to the front, and her running style and strategy worked well for her in this race. I'm thrilled with how our kids have worked and progressed, and we have much more to accomplish this season."

South Plains will be back on the course on Friday, October 11 in Hobbs at the NMJC Invitational.
