
LEVELLAND — Former South Plains All-American Vernon Norwood added to his medal count over the weekend in the men's 4x400 relay, leading Team USA to an Olympic record at the Stade de France in Saint Denis.
Norwood, a six-time NJCAA all-American at South Plains and a four-time NCAA champion at LSU, ran the second leg for Team USA, putting down a split of 43.30. The Americans would go on to set an Olympic record of 2:54.43, winning their third consecutive gold medal in the 4x400. Norwood also highlighted the mixed 4x400 relay team, which posted the third-best time in history and won a silver medal at 3:07.74.
A former walk-on at South Plains, Taylor, Texas native Fred Kerley secured the bronze medal in the men's 100 meters in Paris. The second Olympic medal of his career, Kerley posted a 9.81 to take third for Team USA.
Kerley is one of only three men who have run a sub-10 second time in the 100 meters, a sub-20 second time in the 200 meters, and a sub-44 second time in the 400 meters. Kerley also medaled in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, capturing the silver medal in the 100 meters.
