Bews takes second in breakaway, South Plains qualifies six for Western Texas College Rodeo finals

SNYDER — The South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams qualified six for the finals of the Western Texas College Rodeo over the weekend, posting three top-three finishes at the Western Texas College Coliseum.

Nathan Clawson placed seventh in tiedown roping for South Plains running a 7.7 in the long round, but no timed in the finals Saturday, notching 45 points. Dawson Loewen added 25 points in steer wrestling, taking ninth after a 5.0 run in the long round, but no timed in the finals.

Maddie Bews turned in a second place finish in breakaway roping, going 1.9 in the long round and 2.1 in the finals, totaling 135 individual points. Kreece Dearing and Katie Bews took third in team roping for South Plains, clocking a 5.6 in the long round and a 9.8 in the finals, totaling 110 individual points. Allie Murphy took ninth in barrel racing, running a 14.09 in the long round and a 19.15 in the finals to finish with a 38.63 average.

South Plains will be back in the arena next weekend at the Howard College Rodeo April 11-13 in Big Spring.
