South Plains rodeo qualifies seven for finals of ENMU Rodeo

PORTALES — The South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams qualified seven for the finals in their first rodeo of the season over the weekend at the Eastern New Mexico University Rodeo.

The Lady Texans finished fourth in the final team standings, led by Kallie Montalvo who placed fifth in goat tying. Montalvo clocked an 8.5 in the long round and an 8.1 in the finals to finish with a 16.6 average and 60 points. Janae Todacheenie added 30 points in breakaway roping, posting a 2.4 in the long round but missed in the finals to take eighth overall.

The Texans finished eighth in the final team standings, tallying 40 points. John Hisel totaled 40 points in team roping, running with Weatherford College' Jett Stewart. The duo ran a 6.1 in the long round but missed in the finals Saturday. Birch Eiguren also made the finals in team roping, riding with Tarleton's Brayden Roe. The two ran a 7.5 in the long round but missed in the finals to take 10th overall.

South Plains' Nathan Clawson placed ninth in tiedown roping, running a 9.6 in the long round but no timed in the finals, picking up five individual points. Dawson Loewen notched a second-place overall finish in steer wrestling, running a 4.6 in the long round and a 4.3 in the finals, totaling 125 individual points. Kreece Dearing took fifth in steer wrestling, posting a 4.6 in the long round and a 6.0 in the finals, good enough for 55 individual points.
