SWEETWATER — Madison Neal and Emery Mask combined for 280 points as the South Plains College women's rodeo team won the women's team title Saturday at the Ranger College Rodeo at the Nolan County Coliseum.
Neal led South Plains with a first place finish in goat tying, running a 6.7 in the long round, followed by a 6.6 in the finals to finish with a 13.3 average and 170 points. South Plains' Kallie Montavlo also qualified for the finals in goat tying, posting a 7.0 in the long round and a 6.9 in the short round, capping the event with a 13.9 average and 65 individual points.
Mask would then add 110 points for SPC in barrel racing, running a 15.07 in the long round and a 14.95 in the finals, posting an average of 30.02, good enough for second place overall. The Lady Texans qualified two for the breakaway roping finals, including Braylee Shephard who finished fifth on the weekend. Shephard ran a 1.9 in the long round but missed in the finals, totaling 80 individual points. Janae Todacheenie placed ninth in breakaway roping, clocking a 2.2 in the long round but missed in the finals, notching 2.5 individual points.
Saturday's finish moves the Lady Texans from fifth to third place in the Southwest Region Standings, jumping Weatherford College and Texas Tech.
On the men's side, Logan Kenline led the Texans with a second place finish in steer wrestling. Kenline turned in a 4.6 in the long round and a 4.9 in the finals to take second overall, totaling 120 points for South Plains. Brey Yore also qualified for the finals in steer wrestling, running a 5.1 in the long round, but missed in the finals to finish 10th overall.
South Plains will be back in the arena next weekend when they travel to Snyder for the Western Texas College Rodeo March 30 - April 1.
