SPC men's and women's basketball teams set for Region V Tournament March 8-11 in Wolfforth

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men's and women's basketball teams will tip off postseason play on Wednesday and Thursday at the NJCAA Region V Tournament, which is slated for March 8-11 at the Tiger Pit at Frenship High School. 

The Texans will play as the No. 4 seed from the west, against Ranger College, the No. 1 seed from the north, at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Lady Texans will play as the top seed from the west, against either Hill College or Ranger College, the No. 4 seed from the north, on Thursday at 7 p.m.

The Texans amassed a record of 22-8 during the regular season, including a 10-6 mark in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. Averaging 76.6 points per game, South Plains is led by Christian Coleman and Jaden Harris, who are each averaging just over 15 points per game. SPC will look to slow down a Ranger team who has won eight in a row and finished with a 12-2 mark in league play after winning the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference title on March 5. Averaging 78 points per game, Ranger is led by sophomore guard Tayton Conerway, who leads the team in scoring with 15.7 points per game. Should the Texans be victorious on Wednesday, they will advance to play either Clarendon or Weatherford on Friday, March 10 at 1 p.m. 

Champions of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference, the Lady Texans will look to secure their fourth consecutive Region V title, winning the Region V crown in each of the past three seasons. South Plains finished the regular season with a record of 18-9, including a 12-2 mark in the WJCAC. Averaging 61 points per game, sophomore Celia Sumbane leads South Plains on the offensive end, averaging 14.9 points per game, and has scored in double figures 23 times this season. South Plains will take on the winner of Ranger College and Hill College, who are playing a one-game playoff on Monday night, with the winner securing the No. 4 seed in the NTJCAC.
