Lady Texans place second, Texans take seventh Saturday at Vernon College Rodeo

VERNON — The South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams notched a pair of top 10 team finishes over the weekend, competing in their fourth rodeo of the fall semester at the Vernon College Rodeo.

The Lady Texans placed second overall in the final women's team standings with 145 points, while the Texans tallied 235 points on the weekend, good enough for seventh place. South Plains will be back in the arena next weekend at the Texas Tech University Rodeo Oct. 27-29 at Cook's Garage in Lubbock.

Braylee Shephard led the Lady Texans with 95 points in breakaway roping, clocking a 2.6 in the long round and a 3.0 in the finals Saturday night, capping the event with a 5.6 average. Emery Mask tacked on 50 points in barrel racing, posting a 17.35 in the long round but no timed in the finals to finish 10th overall. South Plains' Morgan Northcutt picked up 57.5 individual points in goat tying, turning in a 7.0 in the long round and a 6.9 in the finals to finish with a 13.9 average.

Brey Yore led the Texans with a second place finish in tiedown roping, clocking a 9.4 in the long round and an 8.9 in the finals, posting an 18.3 average and 130 for South Plains. Yore would add another 105 points to his total in steer wrestling, running a 4.7 in the long round and a 4.8 in the finals to finish with a 9.5 average, good enough for third overall. Clay Hurt placed seventh in steer wrestling for SPC, running a 4.6 in the long round but no timed in the finals, notching 40 individual points.
