#1 Texans, #4 Lady Texans notch seven event titles at Jo Meaker Classic and Multi

CANYON, Texas — Tallying 10 event titles a week ago in San Angelo, the South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams shined over the weekend at the Jo Meaker Classic and Multi, notching seven event titles at the West Texas A&M Track and Field Complex.

South Plains will be off next weekend over the Easter holiday before returning to action on April 14 at Lubbock Christian University, followed by a trip to Hobbs for the NMJC Ross Black Invitational on April 22.

All-American Chris Robinson got things rolling for the top-ranked Texans, putting down a 46.57 to win the men's 400 meters. Caio Almeida turned in a 47.65 in the 400, good enough for third overall. The Texans then went one-two in the 400 hurdles as Nelvin Appiah-Konadu was first in 53.78, followed by Jeremy Bembridge who was second in 53.99. In the women's 800 meters on Friday, South Plains placed two in the top eight as Cemore Donald was second in 2:12.07, while Camille Lewis was seventh in 2:17.48 for the fourth-ranked Lady Texans.

"I thought we had a solid effort from beginning to end," South Plains College head coach Erik Vance said. "We had a good day one in the 400 and 400 hurdles and ran really well. Chris won the 400 and I thought Cemore and Camille ran well in the women's 800. We had around 10 kids who weren't competing this weekend that didn't have to go, but they got on the bus to support their teammates, and I think that attitude showed across the board and we had a good weekend."

The Texans posted the top two times in the men's 1500 meter run, as Aron Tanui placed first in 3:55.43, while Mehdi Yanouri was second in 3:55.60. In the women's 1500 meters, Donald posted a 5:05.07, good enough for fourth overall. In the men's high jump, Danyon Williams took second with a clearance of 6' 11.75".

All-American Thomas Nieto won the men's pole vault on Friday for South Plains, getting over the bar at 17' 6.5. In the women's 100 meter hurdles, Ashyiria Savage placed fifth in a time of 14.27. The Texans posted a third place finish in the men's 110 hurdles as Justin Guy crossed the line in 14.00.

In the women's 400 meters, Success Umukoro placed second in a time of 55.01, while Amaya Phillips was fourth in 56.79 and Anna-Kay Allen took seventh in 57.68. In the heptathlon, Jamelia Simmons posted a personal best of 4450 points for the Lady Texans, posting a third place finish on the weekend. In the women's 400 hurdles, Lewis took third in 1:03.47, while Corlasia Scott was sixth in 1:04.17.

"Amaya and Anna-Kay ran really well and ran hard and did exactly what we asked of them," Vance said. "Simmons didn't have her best outing at San Angelo last week, and over the course of two days, this week had five PRs and upped her score from Angelo by over 900 points. She moved from being on the bubble on whether she would qualify to posting what I think will be a top-five mark heading into the national meet."

In the men's shot put, Donroy Brown placed third with a throw of 53' 5.5". In the women's discus, Kimola Hines turned in a fifth place finish with a throw of 128' 9".. Elisha Teneus-Claude placed fifth for South Plains in the men's triple jump, going 47' 0.75".. In the women's high jump, Amaya Brown was sixth with a mark of 5' 2.25". The Texans turned in a second place finish in the men's 4x100, as Kendal Culmer, Keontae Gaines, Shevioe Reid, and Chaunzavia Lewis clocked a 39.92.

South Plains closed out the meet with a pair of first place finishes in the men's and women's 4x400 relay. Umukoro, Scott, Allen, and Phillips turned in a 3:51.24, while Robinson, Reid, Almeida, and Hossam Hatib posted a 3:06.85.
