South Plains College track and field teams rack up post-season awards Thursday

LEVELLAND — Less than a week removed from winning the NJCAA Men's Indoor Track and Field National Championship and a fourth-place national finish in the women's team standings, the South Plains College track and field program added additional hardware to the trophy case Thursday.

Leading the Texans to their second consecutive indoor title in dominant fashion, SPC head coach Erik Vance was tabbed the USTFCCCA National Men's Coach of the Year, as well as the Men's West Region Coach of the Year. The Texans ran away with the indoor title in Pittsburg, KS, amassing 140 points, some 78 points greater than second-place finished Barton County. This marks the third indoor crown under Vance, who previously led South Plains to the 2018 and 2021 men's indoor titles.

South Plains College assistant track and field assistant coach Wes Miller once again played a pivotal role in helping the Texans reach the top of the podium, and for his efforts, was named the USTFCCCA National Men's Assistant Coach of the Year, as well as the West Region Assistant Coach of the Year. Miller helped the Texans win five event titles in the 400, 600, 800, 4x400, and 4x800.

Sophomore Chris Robinson did it all for South Plains at the indoor national meet, winning the men's 600 meters in 1:16.99, and earned a national runner-up finish in the men's 60 hurdles in 7.87. Robinson also ran on the Texans 4x400 relay team, which won national gold in 3:07.68. For his efforts, Robinson has been named the USTFCCCA National Men's Track Athlete of the Year.

Sophomore Thomas Nieto won national gold in the men's pole vault for South Plains at the national meet, clearing 17' 5.50", which went down as the third top mark in NJCAA History. Nieto was recognized for his efforts Thursday, as he was named the West Region Men's Field Athlete of the Year.

Leading the Lady Texans to a fourth-place national finish, Joniar Thomas was crowned national champion in the women's long jump at the indoor national meet, soaring 20' 9". Following a stellar indoor campaign, Thomas has been named the West Region Women's Field Athlete of the Year.
