#1 Texans, #4 Lady Texans set for Jarvis Scott Open Friday in Lubbock

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams will compete in their final meet before nationals when they take to the track on Friday in Lubbock at the Jarvis Scott Open at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center.

Ranked first and fourth in the latest national poll, the Texans and Lady Texans will look to build on what has been a stellar season to date after another strong outing a week ago at the Texas Tech Shootout. 

Kudakwashe Chadenga set a new school record in the men's high jump last Saturday, after previously setting the school record in College Station when he went 7' 2.5" at the Charlie Thomas Invitational on Feb. 5. Chadenga topped his previous mark, soaring 7' 3.25", the fourth-best mark in NJCAA history. South Plains' Davyon Williams also hit a national qualifying mark in the men's high jump, clearing 6' 10.25", good enough for sixth place.  

Chris Robinson recorded a personal best and hit a qualifying mark in the men's 60 hurdles, crossing the line in 8.08. In the men's pole vault, Thomas Nieto set a personal best, placing second with a clearance of 16' 7.25". Freshman Donroy Brown set a personal best and hit a qualifying mark in the men's shot put with a throw of 50' 7.25".

In the men's 200 meters, Jeremy Bembridge set a personal best and hit a national qualifying mark, clocking a 21.59 to take second. Bembridge would then hit a qualifying mark in the 400 meters, going 47.70. Shevoie Reid and Evaldo Whitehorne also hit qualifying marks in the 400, running a 48.0 and a 48.38, respectively.

Chris Robinson hit a qualifying mark and a new personal best in the 600 meters, placing second with a time of 1:17.79. Chevonne Hall and Dwight Mason hit national marks in the 600 meters, running a 1:19.13 and a 1:20.66, respectively. Hall also hit a qualifying mark in the 800 meters, clocking a 1:50.88, good enough for fifth place. In the men's mile run, Mehdi Yanouri and Aron Tanui hit qualifying marks, running a 4:11.74 and a 4:15.17, respectively.

In the women's 60 meters, Success Umukoro set a personal best and earned a qualifying mark with a time of 7.51. Cemore Donald and Anna-Kay Allen earned qualifying marks in the women's 400 meters, placing third and fifth in times of 56.70 and 57.04, respectively.

Jamelia Simmons and Amaya Phillips also hit qualifying marks in the 400 meters, posting times of 58.05 and 58.08, respectively. The Lady Texans picked up three qualifying marks in 600 meters, as Donald, Camille Lewis, and Phillips clocked final times of 1:34.17, 1:35.98, and 1:36.32. Freshman Ashyiria Savage set a personal best and earned a qualifying mark in the 60 hurdles, crossing the line in 8.86.

Following Friday's meet, South Plains will look to add to the trophy case March 4-5 when they travel to Pittsburg, Kansas for the 2021 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships.
