South Plains College track and field teams wrap up Texas Tech Shootout Saturday

LUBBOCK — Kudakwashe Chadenga set a new school record in the men's high jump Saturday as the South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the Texas Tech Shootout at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center.

Chadenga went 7' 2.5" at the Charlie Thomas Invitational on Feb. 5, which was a new school record as well as the #6 all-time mark in the NJCAA. Chadenga topped his previous record, soaring 7' 3.25" on Saturday, the fourth best mark in NJCAA history. South Plains' Davyon Williams hit a national qualifying mark in the men's high jump, clearing 6' 10.25", good enough for sixth place.

"Kudakwashe is as competitive as some of the best high jumper I've ever had," South Plains head coach Erik Vance said. "He's one of the best high jumpers I have had, and he doesn't want to lose and gets after it. He has some serious natural talent, and I'm excited for what the future holds."

Chris Robinson recorded a personal best and hit a qualifying mark in the men's 60 hurdles, crossing the line in 8.08. Freshman Donroy Brown set a personal best and hit a qualifying mark in the men's shot put with a throw of 50' 7.25".

"Donroy is a great kid and a super hard worker," Vance said. "It's a transition from the high school shot put to the college shot put, and it's a significant weight increase. He has kept getting after it and kept competing, and it was nice to see him pop a big throw today."

In the men's 200 meters, Jeremy Bembridge set a personal best and hit a national qualifying mark, clocking a 21.59 to take second. Bembridge would then hit a qualifying mark in the 400 meters, going 47.70. Shevoie Reid and Evaldo Whitehorne also hit qualifying marks in the 400, running a 48.0 and a 48.38, respectively.

"I talked about last week how our women have had a breakthrough, competing and really showing what the true heart of that squad is," Vance said. "We continued that this week, and Cemore Donald, Anna-Kay Allen, Camille Lewis, and Amaya Phillips are the sophomore leaders of that group. They all went out and ran well, and really have turned the corner and decided it's time to get to work and get some things done, and it has really shown on the track."
