SPC track and field teams wrap up day one of Charlie Thomas Invitational Friday in College Station

COLLEGE STATION — The South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up day one of the Charlie Thomas Invitational Friday at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium at the McFerrin Athletic Center.

South Plains notched a second-place finish in the men's distance medley, as the Texans posted a final time of 9:51.67. Houston was first in 9:48.57, while Alabama took third in 9:54.92. In the men's Group A pole vault event, sophomore Thomas Nieto placed sixth overall, clearing 16' 6.5".

Racking up 2677 points, the Texans' Nelvin Appiah-Konadu currently sits in the seventh in the heptathlon. Appiah-Konadu highlighted day one with a third place finish in the high jump, clearing 6' 3.5", and was fifth in the 60 meters in a time of 7.20.

In the pentathlon, Jamelia Simmons is currently 14th with 3107 points, while Joniar Thomas is 17th with 2933 points. Simmons highlighted day one with a sixth place finish in the long jump, soaring 18' 1.5". Thomas took the top spot in the long jump, turning in a final mark of 19' 9.75".
