Texans, Lady Texans combine for nine event titles Friday at Texas Tech Matador Qualifier

LUBBOCK — The South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams picked up nine event titles Friday in their final meet before indoor nationals at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center at the Texas Tech Matador Qualifier.

Sophomore Denvaughn Whymns got things rolling for the Texans with a first place finish in the men's long jump with a final mark 24' 10". Freshman Tony McNeal would take third in the event for South Plains, soaring 23' 6". Freshman Rosemary Chukuma captured the first event title for the Lady Texans in the women's 60 meters, clocking a 7.41.

In the women's 1000m, Sophomore All-American Dorcus Ewoi posted the top time as she crossed the line in 2:51.56. Sophomore Moitalel Mpoke, who set a new world record a week ago in the men's 600-yard run set a new meet record in the men's 1000m, running a 2:26.90. In the men's 400 meters, freshman Khaleb McRae took first overall with a time of 47.41.

In the men's high jump, freshman Romaine Beckford set a meet record, turning in a final mark of 7' 1.75". In the women's 800 meters, freshman Lexi Jackson turned in the top time with a 2:21.39 to take first for the Lady Texans.

Running in the men's 3000 meters, freshman Abdirizak Ibrahim was the first runner across the line with a time of 8:57.76. The Lady Texans would close out the meet with a first place finish in the women's 4x400 as Amaya Phillips, Itzel Garcia Santos, Anna Kay Allen, and Jordan Brown clocked a 3:49.27.

South Plains will now shift its focus to the national meet as they will be off next week before traveling to Lynchburg, Virginia March 6-7 for the 2020 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.
