South Plains track and field set for Charlie Thomas Invitational Feb. 7-8 in College Station

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams will be on the road this weekend to compete at the Charlie Thomas Invitational February 7-8 on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium at the McFerrin Athletic Center.

South Plains will be the lone junior college competing in the event as they are set to compete against the likes of Texas A&M, Arkansas, Arkansas Little Rock, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Houston, Rice, Texas, UT-Arlington, UT-San Antonio, TCU, Vanderbilt, and Washington State.

Action will get underway with the pentathlon 60-meter hurdles at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, with the men's 5000 meters set to cap the day one running events at 7:25 p.m. Day two will get underway on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with the heptathlon 60-meter hurdles and will conclude at 5:45 p.m. with the men's 4x400 relay. In their last outing on Jan. 24 in Lubbock at the Texas Tech Red Raider Invitational, the third-ranked Texans and No. 4-ranked Lady Texans combined for four event titles and have racked up 31 national qualifying marks to date after just two meets.

South Plains Freshman Rosemary Chukwuma won the women's 200 meters in Lubbock, besting Texas Tech's Jadsie Warden with a time of 24.00 to take the top spot. Chukwuma would then take first overall in the women's 60 meters, clocking a final time of 7.33.

The Texans picked up an event title in the men's 400 meters at the Red Raider Invitational as sophomore Moitalel Mpoke posted the fasted time in 46.32, with Jalen Brown of Arkansas placing second in 47.33. Sophomore All-American Dorcus Ewoi won the women's 800 meters for the Lady Texans, crossing the line in 2:14.21.

"Rosemary ran well and ran a good race in prelims and turned around and ran a personal best and the top time in the nation," South Plains head coach Erik Vance said. "Moitalel ran very well in the 400 and to do that this early in the season is great. We're up to 31 qualifiers so far after two weeks, and we're really pleased with that and need to improve each time out."

In the men's 3000 meters, freshman Abdirizak Ibrahim placed second overall, crossing the line in 8:43.79. The Texans' Romaine Beckford earned an eighth-place finish in the men's high jump, clearing 6' 8" on his fourth attempt. South Plains freshman Tony McNeal placed third in the men's long jump, posting a final mark of 24' 3.75".

The Lady Texans earned a fifth-place finish in the women's mile run as sophomore standout Gladys Jemaiyo crossed the line in a time of 5:10.83. In the women's shot put, freshman Silva Tafiti placed fourth with a throw of 47' 9". The Texans capped the meet winning their heat in the men's 4x400 as Khaleb McRae Mpoke, Issac Hastings and Donnis Blue clocked a dazzling time of 3:11.19.

Following the weekend, South Plains will return to the track Feb. 14-15 at the Texas Tech Shootout before competing at the Texas Tech Matador Qualifier Feb. 21.
