Lady Texan XC place first Friday at New Mexico Junior College Invitational

HOBBS, N.M. — The South Plains College women's cross country team placed three runners inside the top five Friday to earn their second meet title of the year at the New Mexico Junior College Invitational at McAdams Park.

The Lady Texans finished with a team score of 26, with a 19:24.04 team average in the women's 5k. New Mexico Junior College placed second with a team score of 39, followed by Eastern New Mexico, Ranger College, and UT-Permian Basin.

Sophomore All-American Gladys Jemaiyo led the Lady Texans with a second place finish with a final time of 18:04.14, with Daisy Kibet plaiacing third in 19:02.88, and Dorcus Ewoi taking fourth in a time of 19:19.61. Itzel Garcia-Santos placed eighth for the Lady Texans with a time of 20:13.24, while Nyia Sena took ninth in 20:20.29.

The Texans placed fourth overall in the men's 8k with a team score of 103, with New Mexico Junior College placing first with a score of 47, followed by Ranger College and UT-Permian Basin. The Texans swept the top two spots as Alex Kitum placed first overall with a time of 24:53.71. Freshman Abdirizak Ibrahim wasn't far behind, taking second in a time of 25:06.98. Ryan Robinson earned a 26th place finish with a time of 27:51.78 as the Texans finished with a team average of 28:12.96.

South Plains will return to action next Saturday when they run on their home course at the 2019 South Plains College Invitational at Brashear Lake in Levelland beginning at 10 a.m.
