South Plains XC to compete at New Mexico Junior College Invitational Friday in Hobbs

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men's and women's cross country teams are set to return to the course on Friday at the 2019 New Mexico Junior College Invitational in Hobbs, N.M. at McAdams Park.  

The women's 5k is slated for a 5 p.m. start time, followed by the men's 8k at 5:30 p.m. Following the trip to NMJC, South Plains will be back in action when they compete on their home course for the first time this season on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 10 a.m. at the South Plains College Invitational.

In their previous outing in Lubbock, the Lady Texans placed three runners inside the top 10 en route to a second place team finish last Saturday at the Texas Tech Cross Country Classic at the Lubbock Christian University Golf Course.

The Lady Texans finished with a total team time of 1:37:07 and a 19:25.38 average in the women's 5k, trailing only Texas Tech who won the women's race amongst the 11 teams competing. Sophomore All-American Gladys Jemaiyo was the first runner across the line for South Plains in 18:07.60, good enough for second place.

Freshman Daisy Kibet wasn't far behind, finishing fourth amongst 108 runners, clocking an 18:26.80. Sophomore standout Dorcus Ewoi used a time of 18:43.10 to take sixth for the Lady Texans, while Itzel Garcia-Santos placed 32nd in a time of 20:36.90.

In the men's 8k, the Texans placed ninth overall with a total time of 2:31:20, with an average of 30:16.16. Abdirizak Ibrahim led the Texans with an 11th place overall finish as the freshman from Amarillo turned in a final time of 27:00.40. Sophomore Alex Kitum turned in a top 20 finish as the second-year runner placed 19th in a time of 27:25.20.
