Lady Texans place 2nd overall at Eastern New Mexico University Rodeo

PORTALES, N.M. — Following a trip to the College National Finals Rodeo a year ago, the South Plains College women's rodeo team picked up where they left off over the weekend, placing second overall at the Eastern New Mexico University Rodeo.

The Lady Texans picked up 195 points in Portales, trailing only Sul Ross State University who took first with 230 team points. Eastern New Mexico University placed third with 185 points, followed by Texas Tech, who placed fourth with 120 points.

South Plains sophomore Kaytlyn Miller racked up 110 points in goat tying, placing second overall, while sophomore Elle Eagles took ninth to tack on 60 points for the Lady Texans. Miller ran an 8.4 in the long round, followed by an 8.5 in the short round to cap the event with a 16.9 average. Eagles won the long round with a run of 7.4, before a 15.2 run in the short round to finish with a 22.6 average.

Miller added 25 points to her weekend total with an eighth-place finish in breakaway roping. Miller turned in a time of 2.6 in the long round followed by a no time in the finals to finish with a 102.6 average.

The Texans finished 10th on the weekend with 50 points, placing three cowboys in the steer wrestling finals Saturday night. Freshman Clay Guthrie was the lone point scorer for the Texans, running a 4.3 in the long round before a no time in the finals to finish eighth overall with a 104.3 average and 50 points. South Plains' Logan Kenline placed ninth with a 104.6 average, following a time of 4.6 in the long round before a no time in the finals.

Dawson Stewart took 10th in steer wrestling for the Texans, running a 5.1 in the long round and a no time in the finals to end the weekend with a 105.1 average. Competing as an individual at Eastern, South Plains' Daryan Dominguez paired up with Texas Tech's David Palma in team roping, placing first overall with a 10.9 average. The duo won the long round in 4.9 and won the short round with a 6.0 to take the top spot overall.

South Plains will return to the arena Sept. 26-28 in Alpine at the Sul Ross State University Rodeo, followed by a trip to Vernon on Oct. 3 for the Vernon College Rodeo.
