South Plains XC to compete at Texas Tech XC Classic Saturday in Lubbock

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Lubbock on Saturday for the Texas Tech Cross Country Classic at the Lubbock Christian University Golf Course.

The women's 5K is slated to begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the men's 8K at 9. Texas Tech will be streaming the meet live which can be accessed here: https://texastech.com/watch/?Live=4982&type=Live

South Plains returns to the course following a stellar outing last Saturday in Snyder at the Western Texas College Open which saw the Lady Texans place first overall in the women's division. The Lady Texans placed three runners inside the top five and four in the top 10, as Gladys Jemaiyo, Daisy Kibet, and Dorcus Ewoi went two-three-four in the women's 5k. Jemaiyo led the Lady Texans with a second-place finish in 19:13.92, while Kibet took third in 19:41.79, and Ewoi was fourth in 20:10.37.

Itzel Garcia-Santos earned a seventh-place finish for the orange and blue in a time of 21:08.64, while Nyia Sena placed 11th in 21:27.51, with Angela Rodriguez crossing the line in 22:16.69, good enough for 14th overall. The Lady Texans racked tallied 26 points with a total time of 1:41:42.23, with an overall average of 20:20.45. New Mexico Junior College took second with a team average of 20:44.27, followed by Ranger College in 23:23.91.

The Texans were unable to place as a team as they competed with just four runners but placed two inside the top five overall. Sophomore standout Alex Kitum used a time of 27:18.59 to take third in the men's 8k, with teammate Abdirizak Ibrahim, a freshman from Amarillo, just a step behind in a time of 27:19.49, good enough for fourth overall.
