HOBBS, N.M. — Sophomore decathlete Asani Hylton was crowned national champion in the decathlon on Friday as action continued from the Ross Black Field of Champions at the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.

With eight events scored on Friday evening, the Texans are currently second with 37.5 points, trailing only Cloud County who holds the top spot with 46 points. The Lady Texans are currently seventh with 21 points but will have ample opportunity to gain ground in Saturday's finals.

Hylton won the decathlon with 7116 points, the eighth-best total in division history. Hylton earned three top-two finishes on Friday and closed out the competition with a third place finish in the 1500 meters in 4:51.66, holding off Central Arizona's Jonathan Ply who placed second with 7076 points.

In the men's high jump, sophomore Bryson Deberry garnered All-American status with a second place finish, totaling eight points for the orange and blue with a final mark of 6' 11.75". The Texans added six points in the men's discus thanks to Riley Finnegan who took third with a throw of 181' 06", a new personal best.

Action will get underway on Saturday with the men's javelin at 10 a.m., with the women's 400-meter relay slated to kick off the running events at 12:30 p.m.
