Four Lady Texan basketball players sign with Div. I universities

LEVELLAND — A year after compiling one of the most successful season's in program history, the South Plains College women's basketball team will send four members from their 2018-2019 squad to the Div. I level next season.

A catalyst for the Lady Texans this season, sophomore Gabbie Green will continue her career at the University of Pittsburgh next season. The 5-7 guard from Bellville, Texas did it all for South Plains during her sophomore stint in Levelland, leading the Lady Texans to their first ever NJCAA No. 1 national ranking and guided SPC to an appearance in the Elite Eight at the NJCAA Women's Basketball National Tournament.

For her efforts, Green was named an NJCAA First Team All-American, a WBCA All-American, the Region V Player of the Year, as well as the Most Valuable Player of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. Green produced on both ends of the court, averaging 14.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game.

Green ranked second in the region with 197 total field goals and fourth in the region with 136 assists. As one of the top scorers in the country, Green ranked third in the region with 504 total points and ranked third in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference with 17.1 points per game during league play.

A 6-foot sophomore from Hot Springs, Arkansas, Keke Hunter will play for the University of Memphis next season. Shooting a team-high 59.3 percent from the field during her sophomore stint in Levelland, Hunter led the Lady Texans in scoring with 14.9 points per game, earning All-Region and All-Conference honors. Hunter recorded 19 double-doubles this season and ranked 12th nationally with 330 total rebounds. Hunter tallied at least 20 points nine times this season, most notably a 34 point, 12-rebound performance against Palo Alto on Nov. 16.

A do it all player for the Lady Texans during her two years in Levelland, sophomore Chantel Govan has signed with Cal Poly University. Govan started 21 games as a sophomore and saw action in all 35 contest, averaging 4.9 points per game while shooting over 38 percent from the floor. A 5-6 guard from San Antonio, Govan tallied double-digit scoring figures three times this season, most notably a season-high 13 points in the Lady Texans' 75-59 win over Tohono O'odham on Nov. 1.

A high energy impact player playing off the bench during her freshman season in Levelland, Romola Dominguez has signed with Central Arkansas University. Dominguez provided a spark for South Plains during her freshman campaign, averaging 5.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game while shooting 48.8 percent from the floor and a team-best 38.2. percent from the 3-point line. Dominguez scored in double figures five times, including an 11-point outing on Feb. 14 against New Mexico Junior College.
