No. 1 Texans, No. 3 Lady Texans combine for eight event titles Saturday in Lubbock

LUBBOCK — The South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams capped the regular season with eight event titles Saturday at the Texas Tech Masked Rider Open at the Fuller Track and Field Complex.

Freshman Akira Phillip kicked off the meet with a first place finish in women's javelin, turning in a final mark of 125' 4". The Texans picked up a third and fourth place finish in the men's javelin, as freshman Bryce Spencer placed third with a throw of 168' 11", while Justin Dean took fourth with a mark of 160' 4".

In the men's long jump, sophomore D'Juan Martin placed third, posting a jump of 23' 6", while sophomore decathlete Asani Hylton took fifth in the long jump, soaring 22'9". Competing against an elite group in the men's high jump, which included the likes of Bradley Atkins and Trey Culver, sophomore Bryson Deberry earned a fourth place finish, clearing 6' 10.75".

In the women's 3000-meter steeplechase, freshman Angela Rodriguez picked up the Lady Texans' second event title on the afternoon, taking first in 12:12.09. The Texans were the first team across the line in the men's 4x100 as Brandon Letts, AJ Pemberton, Adresse Atkins, and Willari Watson turned in a time of 40.46 out of lane six.

In the men's 110 hurdles, the Texans swept the top three spots as Decoven Young took first in 14.65, while Denvaughn Whymns placed second in 14.69, and Hylton finished third in 15.01. Sophomore Janiel Moore turned in a third place finish in the women's 400 meters in a time of 55.09, while Isaiah Griffith won the men's triple jump and hit a national qualifying mark with a jump of 53' 1".

The Texans placed two in the top four of the men's 5000 meters as sophomore Andrew Bosquez took the top spot in a time of 15:09.48, while Filmon Beyene placed fourth in 15:38.91. South Plains swept the men's and women's 4x400 relays, as Geordan Blanchard, Janiel Moore, Elon'a Jones, and Hanah Mills placed first for the Lady Texans in a time of 3:51.66. In the men's 4x400, Devonte Smith, Noel Hewitt, Watson, and Donnis Blue took first for the Texans in a time of 3:15.06.

With the regular season in the rearview, South Plains will return to action May 16-18 as they look to add to the trophy case at the 2019 NJCAA Track and Field Outdoor National Championships on the campus of New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, New Mexico.
