LEVELLAND — Each ranked in the top three of the USTFCCCA national poll, the South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams will travel to Abilene on Thursday for the ACU Oliver Jackson Twilight at Elmer Gray Stadium.
Field events are slated to begin at 10 a.m. with the men's and women's javelin throw. Running events are slated to get underway at 3:30 p.m. with the men's and women's 100-meter dash. The full schedule can be found below.
The Texans come in as the No. 1 team in the country in the latest USTFCCCA junior college national rankings, with the Lady Texans earning a No. 3 NJCAA ranking. The Texans and Lady Texans combined for six event titles in Hobbs at the Ross Black Invitational on April 13, and sophomore standout Asani Hylton won the men's decathlon at the 92nd KU Relays on April 18.

Freshman Scott Frazier won the men's pole vault for the Texans in Hobbs after clearing 13' 11.25" on the second attempt of his first bar. Sophomore All-American Asani Hylton took second in the pole vault Friday, clearing 11' 11.75in his first vault appearance of the outdoor season. In the men's hammer throw, South Plains freshman Bryce Spencer placed second with a throw of 131' 5".
Sophomore Riley Finnegan won the men's discus for South Plains with a mark of 155' 9", while Spencer earned a third-place finish with a throw of 148' 3". Sophomore jump specialist Holland Martin won the men's long jump and recorded a personal best, soaring 25' 11". Denvaughn Whymns and D'Juan Martin went 2-3 in the long jump for South Plains, as Whymns turned in a jump of 23' 10.75", while Martin went 23' 8.75".
South Plains' Ruth Usoro notched a third-place finish in the women's long jump for the Lady Texans, jumping 19' 11" on her third jump of the afternoon. South Plains went 1-2 in the men's 10000 meters as sophomore Andrew Bosquez was the first runner across the line in 32:34.54, while freshman Alex Kitum took second in 33:00.76.
The Lady Texans won the women's 10000 meters as freshman Gladys Jemaiyo took the top spot with a time of 35:40.46. In the men's 200 meter prelims, freshmen AJ Pemberton and Adrese Atkins placed first and second for South Plains, as Pemberton ran a 21.50, while Atkins turned in a 21.65. Pemberton also won the men's 100-meter prelims in 10.70, while Atkins took third in 10.77.
Sophomore Filmon Beyene won the men's 5000 meters for the Texans, clocking a 15:51.91. In the women's 5000 meter finals, freshman Angela Rodriguez took fifth in a time of 19:54.75. The Texans placed a pair of hurdlers in the top three of the men's 110-meter hurdle prelims as Deion Lightfoot won in 14.53. while Decoven Young took third in 15.37.
Hylton runs the field in Lawrence:
Holding a 259-point lead after day one, Hylton finished with 6,548 points, with second place finisher Logan Lamb of Baker University capping the meet with 6078 points. Hylton posted the top mark in the javelin with a throw of 160' 8", picking up 573 points, followed by a second place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 15.66, netting 772 points.
Hylton would then turn in a second place finish in the discus throw with a mark of 101' 11", tacking on 486 points, and cleared 12' 5½" in the pole vault, good enough for second overall and 562 points. Hylton closed out the meet with a second place finish in the men's 1500 meters, crossing the line in 5:06.78 to add 521 points to his final total.
In day one action on Wednesday, Hylton posted the top mark in the shot put with a throw of 37' 5¼", notching 571 points. Hylton followed up with a first-place finish in the high jump, clearing 6' 9" for 859 points. Hylton placed second in the 400-meter dash in a time of 52.87, tacking on 687 points, and placed second in the long jump with a mark of 22' 1" to net 750 points. Hylton rounded out the day with a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter dash, crossing the line in 11.43 for 767 points.
