LUBBOCK — A week after winning three event titles in their outdoor season opener in Abilene, the South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams capped their second outdoor meet with five event titles Saturday at the Fearless Champion Open on the campus of Texas Tech University.

"We really challenged both teams to show us some things this week," South Plains head coach Erik Vance said. "Last week we didn't feel like we had the full team effort that we like to see, and we had a lot of kids who rose to the occasion today. We had some great execution and we're heading in the right direction and they're doing what we're asking them to do."

South Pains' Dorcus Ewoi ran away from an elite field in the women's 1500 meters as the freshman from Kenya placed first in a time of 4:44.20. Teammate Gladys Jemaiyo was the third runner across the line in the 1500 meters, turning in a time of 4:52.26 for South Plains.

"Dorcus' mindset is really improving," Vance said. "In the cross country season, she ran well for us and we were ecstatic with what she did.  And, I'm not sure she was confident in her own abilities throughout indoor and moving to the outdoor season now. I think she's starting to understand how good she is, and that's a really good thing because she's not afraid to go get anybody. If she continues to understand how good she really is, there are some big things coming for her."

Sophomore Deion Lightfoot edged West Texas A&M' Lorenzo Johnson in the men's 110 hurdles as Lightfoot placed first in 14.30. Decoven Young also placed in the top 10, clocking a 14.74, good enough for seventh on the afternoon. Lightfoot would follow up with a fifth-place finish in the 400 hurdles, running a 53.09. 

The Texans turned in their second event title in the men's 800 meters as freshman Japhet Toroltich took first with a time of 1:56.36. In the women's 200 meters, sophomore sprinter Ruth Usoro topped the field, taking first for the Lady Texans in 23.46.

"Ruth really ran well in the 200 and that was great to see," Vance said. "Deion Lightoof had a great day and put together a strong performance in his season opener in the 400 hurdles. Our distance squad on both sides tore it up and got after it, and overall we really had some good times and a good outing on both sides."

South Plains' Jesse Madrid capped the meet with a top finish in the men's 5000 meters, turning in a time of 15:26.85. Filmon Beyene wasn't far behind, clocking a 15:45.06 to take fourth overall for the Texans. In the men's 100 meters, sophomore Brandon Letts ran a personal best in 10.43, taking third overall.

In the men's long jump, D'Juan Martin and Devaughn Whymns went 4-5 for South Plains as Martin turned in a mark of 23' 3.25", while Whymns soared 22' 7.75." Sophomore Bryson Deberry took second in the men's high jump for the Texans, clearing 6' 11" on the second attempt of his third bar.

South Plains picked up a second place finish in the men's 4x100 relay as Brandon Letts, A.J. Pemberton, Adrese Atkins, and Willari Watson ran a 40.05 out of lane eight. A week after winning the men's 1500 meters in Abilene, sophomore Andrew Bosquez turned in a second place finish on Saturday, running a 4:00.93.
