No. 1 Lady Texans, No. 9 Texans travel to Big Spring Thursday to take on Howard

LEVELLAND — Each sitting atop the conference standings, the South Plains College men's and women's basketball teams will be on the road Thursday night looking for a pair of conference road wins in Big Spring against Howard College.

The Lady Texans will tip at 5:45 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30. Both games will be streaming live at spctexans.com and Michael Wiiest of KLVT Radio Levelland will call the courtside action with pregame slated for 5:30 p.m.

The top-ranked Lady Texans are riding a 21 game win streak and come in with a 24-1 mark on the year including a 9-0 record in league play. South Plains defeated Frank Phillips College 92-58 on Monday in Levelland behind Gabbie Green's 26-point performance.

In their previous matchup with Howard on Jan. 7 in Levelland, Green netted 22 points and seven assists as the Lady Texans rolled to a 72-49 win. Freshman Nyah Morris finished with 12 points and was 4 of 8 from 3 in 24 minutes of action, while Romola Dominguez netted 11 points, five boards, and five assists.

Howard brings an 11-12 record into Thursday and is 4-5 in the WJCAC. Averaging 57 points per game and shooting 33.8 percent from the floor, the Lady Hawks have dropped three of their last four in conference play.

Ranked ninth in the latest NJCAA national poll, the Texans are coming off their highest scoring total of the season as they pounded Frank Phillips College 111-51 Monday night at home. Sophomore Gaige Prim led all scorers with points and eight boards as the Texans shot a season-high 68.3 percent from the field against the Plainsmen.

In their first matchup with the Hawks in Levelland, Chris Orlina led South Plains with 19 points and five boards as the Texans downed Howard 68-62. Prim netted 16 points and 11 boards, knocking down 6 of 10 attempts from the floor while Jonah Antonio tallied nine points for South Plains while Charles Jennings recorded eight.

Currently 14-6 on the season and 6-4 in the WJCAC, Howard has dropped their last two outings in league play, most recently am an 81-79 loss at Western Texas on Monday. Averaging just over 78 points per game and shoot 44.7 percent from the floor, Howard is 5-2 on their home court this season.
