Lady Texans earn No. 5 NJCAA women's basketball national ranking Tuesday

LEVELLAND — Following 15 consecutive wins dating back to mid-November, the South Plains College women's basketball earned a No. 5 NJCAA national ranking on Tuesday.

The Lady Texans are 18-1 on the year and 3-0 in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference including wins over No. 23 Cochise and No. 25 Midland College. South Plains ranks first in the country with a 50.7 field goal percentage and 3rd in total points with 1603.

Averaging 33.2 field goals per game which ranks 7th in the NJCAA, the Lady Texans have also proven to be one of the top defensive teams as they are holding their opponents to just 49.1 points per game, 7th best in the NJCAA.

South Plains has four players averaging double-digit scoring figures on the year including sophomore Keke Hunter who leads the team with 16.1 points per game and is shooting over 59 percent from the field this season. After defeating Howard College Monday night at the Texan Dome, the Lady Texans are off on Thursday as they prepare for their toughest test to date when they play host to No. 3 New Mexico Junior College on Monday, Jan. 14 at 5:45 p.m. at the Texan Dome.
