South Plains rodeo qualifies three athletes for College National Finals Rodeo Finals Saturday night

CASPER, Wyoming — The Southwest Region is arguably the toughest region in collegiate rodeo.

The South Plains College rodeo program added another notch to that testament Friday night as they qualified three athletes for the College National Finals Rodeo finals which are set for 7 p.m. MDT Saturday night and will be broadcast live on ESPN3.

"It's been a good week, and overall our kids went out and performed well," South Plains head coach Kerry Doster said. "We didn't draw the best in some of the first few rounds, but the kids stayed focused and I was really pleased overall with what they were able to accomplish."

Competing in his final rodeo for the Texans, sophomore cowboy Chet Boren will compete for a national crown in steer wrestling after running a 7.0 in his final run Friday night, qualifying for the CNFR finals with an overall average of 16.9, good enough for sixth overall.

"Chet has had some tough draws this week which hurt his position a little going into the finals, but that's just one of things you can't really control," Doster said. "He's always been a tough competitor and we know he will go out tomorrow and give it his all, and we'll see where he can end up."

A sophomore from Brush, Colorado who has proven to be one of the top barrel racers in the country, South Plains' Alex Odle will represent the Lady Texans in the CNFR finals after ending the week third overall, running a 14.55 in her final run Friday night to end the week with a 44.03 average. Joining Odle in the finals will be teammate Jenna Dallyn, a Nanton Toliro, Canada native who ended the week with the third best overall average in goat tying with a 20.0 including a time of 6.5 in her final two runs.

"It will be fun to watch Jenna and Alex tomorrow in their last rodeo for us, and I'm definitely going to miss having them on our team," Doster said. "Both of those girls are great competitors, and there's three barrel racers from the Southwest Region sitting first, second and third in the nation, and that's just a testament to the level of competition they compete against every weekend in our region."
