South Plains rodeo racks up WJCAC All-Conference honors

LEVELLAND — For the third time in as many years, South Plains College head rodeo coach Kerry Doster was named the Western Junior College Athletic Conference Women's Head Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Texans to their third consecutive Western Junior College Athletic Conference title.

The Lady Texans made program history during the 2017-2018 season, qualifying for the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming for the first time in program history after a second place finish in the Southwest Region. The Texans also proved to be one of the top programs in the region once again ending the year sixth in the overall standings with 1,915 points.

For their efforts, the Texans and Lady Texans were well represented on the WJCAC All-Conference list. The Lady Texans had two student-athletes earn all-conference honors in Jenna Dallyn and Lariat Larner, both of whom were also named to the Dean's List while competing for the Lady Texans.

Dallyn finished the year second in the regional standings in goat tying with 655 points, earning the Nanton Toliro, Canada native First Team All-Conference honors. Larner, a sophomore from Stephenville was also named a First Team All-Conference selection in breakaway roping thanks to a sixth place overall finish with 195 points on the year.

For the second time in as many years, Chet Boren will represent the Texans at the College National Finals Rodeo after winning the region in steer wrestling and finishing second in the men's all-around standings. Boren, who also represented the Texans on the Dean's List at South Plains, finished 12th in tiedown roping. For his efforts, Boren was named a First Team All-Conference Selection in both steer wrestling and tiedown roping. Joining Boren on the all-conference list is teammate Kade Sherwood, a sophomore from Wilson, Texas who was named a First Team All-Conference Selection in team roping (header) after finishing the year fourth overall in the Southwest Region with 285 points.
