South Plains rodeo to saddle up April 19-21 in Stephenville

LEVELLAND — With just one rodeo remaining in the 2017-2018 season, the South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams will return to the arena April 19-21 in Stephenville at the Tarleton State University Rodeo.

The Lady Texans enter the final week eyeing the program's first-ever regional title as they sit atop the leaderboards in the Southwest Region with 1,636 points, holding an edge over Tarleton State who's currently in second with 1,534 points, and Texas Tech, who is currently in the third spot with 1,528 points. The top two teams in the region will advance to the College National Finals Rodeo in June in Casper, Wyoming. The Texans also find themselves inside the top 10 in the region, currently sitting in seventh with 1,465 points.

South Plains Kade Sherwood captured the team roping event title a week ago in Big Spring tallying 175 points and lead the Texans to a seventh place overall finish. Lariat Larner was the lone Lady Texan in the finals a week ago and picked up a crucial 70 points in breakaway roping with a sixth place overall finish.

Sophomore Chet Boren comes into the final week sitting in second in the men's all-around standings with 705 points, trailing only Tegan Smith of Clarendon who holds the top spot with 995 points. The top two point-getters at the end of the season advance to the College National Finals Rodeo. Boren currently sits in third in men's steer wrestling with 375 points, 12th in the region in tiedown roping with 200 points, and 13th in team roping with 130 points.

Zack Kirkpatrick: Steer wrestling – 10th, 220 points.

Kade Sherwood: Team roping header – 4th, 285 points

Hadley Cloward: Team roping heeler – 13th, 130 points

Alex Odle: Barrel racing – 7th, 330 points

Lariat Larner: Breakaway roping – 6th, 195 points; Goat tying – 10th, 175 points

Jenna Dallyn: Goat tying – 2nd, 655 points
