Sherwood captures event title, Lady Texans hold on to region lead Saturday in Big Spring

BIG SPRING — Kade Sherwood won the team roping event title and Lariat Larner placed sixth in breakaway roping as the South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams capped off the Howard College Rodeo Saturday night.

Larner tied for the fastest time in the long round with a  2.3 but missed in Saturday's finals, tallying 70 points for the Lady Texans who will head to Stephenville April 19-21 for their final rodeo of the season sitting atop the Southwest Regional standings.

"Lariat split in the breakaway roping and ended up with 70 points which is crucial for us," South Plains head coach Kerry Doster said. "This is the toughest region in the nation, and the fact that it's going to come down to the final rodeo, this is how it should be. When you have this many quality programs in one region, there's no surprise it's going to come down to the final week."

Sherwood paired up with Ranger's Weston Podzemny as the duo won the long round with a 4.8 which they followed up in Saturday night's finals with a 5.5, ending the event with a 10.3 average as Sherwood tallied 175 points for the Texans who finished seventh overall on the weekend.

The Lady Texans finished eighth in Big Spring with 70 points and will head into the final week of the season atop the regional standings with 1,636 points. Tarleton State, who finished seventh at Howard with 115 points, is second in the region with 1,534 points, while Texas Tech is third with 1,528 points.
