Boren, Dallyn capture event titles at Western Texas College Rodeo

SNYDER — The South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams picked up a pair of event titles on Saturday night at the Western Texas College Rodeo.

Entering the weekend in second in the men's all-around standings, sophomore Chet Boren added 170 points to his season total, wrestling his way to a first-place overall finish in steer wrestling. Boren clocked the top time with a 4.7 in the long round, which he followed up with a 5.0 in Saturday's finals, finishing with a 9.7 average, nearly three seconds ahead of second place finisher Burley White (12.2) of Howard College.

Boren, who has tallied 705 points to date, closed the gap on Clarendon's Tegan Smith who is currently first in the men's all-around standings with 975 points with two rodeos remaining. The top two point-getters in the Southwest region will advance to the College Finals National Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming in June.

"We had a few things that didn't go our way this weekend, but we were able to come out on top in goat tying and steer wrestling and kind of solidify the weekend," South Plains head coach Kerry Doster said. "Chet really put together a great performance and he really needed this one. He's worked hard all year and deserved what he got tonight."

The Lady Texans added 160 points to their region-leading point total thanks to sophomore Jenna Dallyn's first-place overall finish in goat tying.  Dallyn ran the second-fastest time with a 7.5 in the long round, which she topped with a 7.1 in the finals, capturing the event title with a 14.6 average and added 160 points to her season total. Dallyn is now tied for the region lead in goat tying with Tarleton State's Baili Collins, each of whom has acquired 655 points to date.

"Jenna's performance was crucial for our women's team," Doster said. "She was able to put together a good performance and put our women's team up about 150 points on Tarleton. That isn't much, but we just have to keep working hard and hope things click for us next weekend."

The Lady Texans finished fifth overall in Snyder with 160 points, and sit atop the Southwest regional standings with 1566 points. Tarleton is currently second with 1419 points. The Texans tied for seventh over the weekend with 170 points and currently sit in seventh in the regional standings with 1290 points.

South Plains will be back in the arena April 12-14 in Big Spring for the Howard College Rodeo before ending the regular season in Stephenville April 19-21 at the Tarleton State University Rodeo.
