South Plains Rodeo rides to pair of top 10 finishes in Alpine

ALPINE — The South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams clinched a pair of top 10 finishes in their final rodeo of the fall semester this weekend at the Sul Ross State University Rodeo.

The Lady Texans finished fifth overall with 130 points and currently rank first in the region with 971 points. Eastern New Mexico won the women's team title with 225 points, followed by Weatherford College, Odessa and Tarleton State.

The Lady Texans placed four athletes in Saturday's final round in goat tying as Lariat Larner finished second overall with 115 points. Larner ran a 7.2 in the long round followed by a 6.8 in the short round and finished with a final average of 14. Sophomore Avery Gonzales placed fourth for South Plains as she ran a 6.8 in the long round and a 7.9 in the short round to finish with a 14.7 average and 120 points.

Jenna Dallyn found herself in the top 10 yet again as the sophomore from Nanton Toliro, Canada ran a 7.2 in the long round followed by an 8.6 in the short round, finishing eighth overall as she added 10 more points to her season total. South Plains' Josey Shannon placed ninth as she ran a 6.9 in the long round and a 9.1 in the short round to finish with a final average of 18.6 and 45 points. In the breakaway roping event, Delaney Kunau placed ninth as she ran a 2.8 in the long round and missed in the short round finishing with a final average of 102.8 and 27.5 points.

The Texans rode their way to a sixth-place finish, ending the weekend with 245 points. Odessa won the men's team title with 490 points, followed by Western Texas College, Tarleton State, Clarendon, and Weatherford.

South Plains' Chase Wilson and Chet Boren represented the Texans in Saturday's steer wrestling final round. Wilson finished fourth overall as he ran a 5.2 in the long round and a 4.7 in the short round to end the weekend with a 9.9 average and 30 points. Boren earned an eighth-place finish and 20 points as he ran a 4.6 in the long round and missed in the short round to finish with a 104.6 average.

Stefan Ramone placed fifth for the orange and blue in tiedown roping as he ran a 10.2 in the long round followed by a 14.7 in the short round to pick up 85 points for South Plains. The Texans' Zack Kirkpatrick paired up with Tarleton's Abby Medlin in team roping. The duo placed fifth overall clinching 70 points thanks to a long round time of 6.6, missing in the short round to finish with a 106.6 average.

South Plains will return to action on February 23-25 when they travel to Odessa for the Odessa College Rodeo, followed by a trip to Brownwood for the Ranger College Rodeo on March 23-25.
