Texans place 3rd, Lady Texans place 8th at National Cross Country Championships

EL DORADO, Kansas—The South Plains College men's and women's cross country teams traveled to the Sunflower State on Saturday to compete at the 2016 NJCAA Cross Country National Championships at the Prairie Trails Golf Course.

The Texans finished third overall in the men's 8K with four Texans earning All-American honors. Central Arizona placed first, with Iowa Central taking second.

"I thought all of them had a solid performance, and every one of them was laying it all out there," South Plains cross country coach Frank Barker said. "They didn't hold anything back today, and I looked on their face and they were all determined. They ran well and I'm really pleased with them."

The Texans were led by freshman Felix Kosgei who crossed the finish line at the 24:51.09 mark, good enough for fifth amongst 298 runners. Omero Rodriguez placed 10th for South Plains, earning All-American honors with his final time of 25:25.93.

Nicholas Rotich was named an All-American with a final time of 25:55.50, placing 24th, while Jose Silva finished 28th and earned All-American honors with a final time of 26:01.45. The Texans finished with a final team score of 112.

"Our guys ran as well as they could today, and they just got outgunned," Barker said. "They competed as well as they could, so I'm pretty tickled about that. Out of our top five guys, four of them were All-Americans, so I can't complain about it."

The Lady Texans put together a top 10 performance in the women's 5K after an eighth place finish with three Lady Texans being deemed All-Americans.

Amarillo native Seselia Dala was the first runner to cross the finish line for South Plains, placing 10th overall with a final time of 18:20.27 amongst 313 runners. Leslie Romero was named an All-American with her 14th place finish and final time of 18:35.20, while Poro Gahekave ran a 18:50.88, finishing 22nd while earning All-American honors.

The Lady Texans finished with a final team score of 261. Lansing Community College placed first with 103 points, with Central Arizona, El Paso Community College, Iowa Central and Mesa rounding out the top five.

"I'll tell you what, our girls came out and ran possessed," Barker said. "All the girls ran very well, and I've always felt they were better than they were ranked. I'm really pleased with them, they laid it on all the line and had three All-Americans, and you can't beat a deal like that.
