Justin Hobbs named new track and field assistant coach

Justin Hobbs has been named the new South Plains College assistant track and field coach.

A native of Waco, Texas, Hobbs comes to South Plains after serving a five-year stint as the assistant track and field coach at Tarleton State University. During the 2015-2016 season, Hobbs coached 13 athletes that reached the NCAA National Championships, with six athletes combining to earn 10 All-American honors.

In his five seasons at Tarleton, Hobbs has coached two national champions, 13 athletes to 22 All-American honors, nine outdoor school record holders and 26 indoor school record holders. A graduate of Lorena High School, Hobbs received his undergraduate degree from Tarleton before advancing his education at Texas Tech University, where he received his Masters Degree in Sports Sciences & Exercise Physiology.

"I was excited for the opportunity to be a part of such a nationally competitive program and work with athletes that possess the talents necessary to be on the national and world level," Hobbs said. "South Plains is such a welcoming place, and it was an easy transition which makes it even more exciting to go and get to work."

Prior to his coaching career at Tarleton, Hobbs was a graduate assistant at Texas Tech where he worked primarily with the sprint runners and hurdle runners. During his time at Texas Tech, Hobbs had the opportunity to work with several All-Americans in the sprints, hurdles and relays.
