    LEVELLAND — After shattering the women’s NJCAA indoor 5000-meter national record at the Charlie Thomas Thomas Invitational, South Plains freshman Gladys Jemaiyo was named the USTFCCCA NJCAA Women’s ITF National Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.

    The Western Junior College Athletic Conference has announced the All-Academic Team for the Fall 2018 semester, with 36 athletes from South Plains College earning academic honors. The WJCAC All-Academic Team is an inclusive honor for all sports, recognizing student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.25 (2nd team) to a 3.64 – 4.0 (1st team).     GULF SHORES, AL — The South Plains College men’s and women’s cross country teams each placed third on Saturday at the NJCAA Half Marathon National Championships at the Orange Beach Sports Complex as freshman Gladys Jemaiyo was crowned national champion after winning the women’s division with a time of 1:21:16.

    LUBBOCK — The South Plains College men’s and women’s cross country teams were back on the course Friday at the Texas Tech Open at the Chaparral Ridge Cross Country Course. The Texans impressed yet again as they finished second overall with 49 points as they placed three runners inside the top five and four in the top 12. Texas Tech won the men’s 8k with 33 points, while Lubbock Christian placed third, followed by Abilene Christian and UT-Permian Basin.

    LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men’s and women’s cross country teams will return to action on Friday in Lubbock at the Texas Tech Open at the Chaparral Ridge Cross Country Course. The men’s 8k will get underway at 8:30 a.m., followed by the women’s 5k at 9 a.m. South Plains will look for a repeat performance following the Western Texas College Open on Sept. 8 in Snyder in which the Texans and Lady Texans each placed first overall, with the men’s team earning a perfect score.
  • Twice as Nice: Texans, Lady Texans sweep Western Texas College Open Saturday in Snyder

    SNYDER – The South Plains College men’s and women’s cross country teams wasted little time on Saturday as they swept the Western Texas College Open in their first outing of the 2018 season. Led by freshman Alex Kitum, the Texans claimed the top five positions of the men’s 8k en route to a first-place finish with a final team average of 27:47:24. Kitum was the first runner across the finish line, clocking a final time of 27:12 in his first collegiate appearance. Sophomore Filmon Beyene turned in a final time of 27:29 to take second, while sophomores Andrew Bosquez and Jesse Madrid placed third and fourth with times of 27:31 and 28:21, respectively. Kenya native Japhet Toroitich earned a fifth-place finish with a time of 28:24, while Erick Arambula turned in a time of 29:47, good enough for ninth.
  • South Plains cross country to kickoff season Saturday in Snyder

    LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men’s and women’s cross country teams will begin their 2018 campaign Saturday in Snyder at the 2018 Western Texas College Open. The women’s 5k will get underway at 9 a.m., followed by the men’s 8k at 9:45 a.m. The Texans enter the year looking for their third consecutive Region V crown and will look to improve on a third-place national finish a year ago. Despite losing All-American Felix Kosgei, who moved on to run for Oklahoma State University, the Texans return several key pieces including sophomore Andrew Bosquez who earned All-American honors last season including a 13th place finish at the national meet in Iowa. The Texans will also look to sophomores Jessie Madrid, Filmon Beyene, and Erick Arambula who return for the orange and blue in 2018.
