BIG SPRING — The South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams capped off the Howard College Rodeo Saturday night with the Texans picking up a second place team finish, while the Lady Texans took sixth overall on the weekend.

With a single rodeo remaining and a regional title hanging in the balance, the Texans are currently fourth in the Southwest Region with 2,885 points, with Tarleton State (3,330), Clarendon College (3,120), and Weatherford College (3,095) holding the top three positions.

The Lady Texans, who are currently third in the region with 1,777 points, are just 50.5 points behind Weatherford (1,827.5) for the second spot. Tarleton currently holds the top position with 2,621 points. The top two teams from each division will advance to the College National Finals Rodeo.

Colton McCarley picked up the Texans' sole team title in Saturday night's team roping finals, paired up with Texas Tech's Cameron McCarley. The duo posted an 8.3 in the long round and won the short round with a 6.1, capping the event with a 14.4 average and 120 points.

Grady Quam added another 60 points for the Texans in team roping thanks to a sixth-place finish, running a 6.5 in the long round before missing in the finals to end the event with a 106.3 average. The Texans tacked on another 30 points in team roping thanks to Britton Bedke who placed seventh with a time of 6.7 in the long round, before missing in the finals, ending with a 106.5 average.

Bedke added another 75 points with a fourth-place finish in tiedown roping, running a 10.1 in the long round and a 12.7 in the short round, finishing with a 22.8 overall average. South Plains' Logan Kenline placed fourth in steer wrestling, running a 5.2 in the long round and an 8.5 in the finals to end the event with a 13.7 average and 90 individual points.

Dawson Stewart tacked on 65 points for the Texans with a sixth-place finish in steer wrestling, posting a time of 5.1 in the long and a 9.8 in the finals, ending with a 14.9 average. South Plains' Kaytlyn Miller, who leads the women's all-around standings with 1,087 points, placed fifth in breakaway roping, picking up 70 points after running a 2.9 in the long round before missing in the finals, capping the event with a 102.90 average. Elle Eagles qualified for the goat tying finals after running a 9.9 in the long round, before posting an 11.9 in the short round to end the event with a 21.8 average and 2.5 points for the Lady Texans.

South Plains will be off next weekend before wrapping up the season with a trip to Stephenville April 25-27 for the Tarleton State University Rodeo.
