South Plains College rodeo teams turn in top finishes at San Antonio College Rodeo Shootout


SAN ANTONIO — The South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams recently competed at the San Antonio College Rodeo Shootout at the Expo Hall on the Freeman Coliseum Grounds, turning in several top finishes against a field of the nation's top college programs.

The event showcases athletes from college rodeo teams in the Southern and Southwest Regions as contestants compete for awards for All-Around Male & Female Athletes and All-Around Males & Female Teams.

Competing against a field of 28 schools, the Lady Texans placed fourth overall in the women's team standings, capping the rodeo with 150 points. Texas Tech University won the women's division with 210 points, followed by Eastern New Mexico University, and McNeese State University.

South Plains' Kaytlyn Miller placed fifth overall in the women's all-around standings after a pair of top 15 finishes in goat tying and barrel racing. Miller placed second overall in goat tying after running the fastest time in the long round with a 6.9, which she followed up with a 7.9 in the finals, finishing with a 14.8 average and 150 points. Miller would then place 12th overall in barrel racing, running 16.01 in the long round which placed the freshman from Dammeron Valley, Utah inside the top 15 on the weekend.

The Texans' Colton McCarley, a freshman from Happy, Texas who currently sits in fifth place in the Southwest Region in tiedown roping earned a sixth place overall finish. McCarley ran a 9.0 in the long round but missed in the finals to cap the tiedown roping event with a 109 average and 50 points for South Plains.

South Plains will return to the arena at the 35th Annual Odessa College Rodeo February 21-23 at the Ector County Coliseum. The Texans and Lady Texans will be looking to climb their way up the leaderboards and vow for a regional title, as the Lady Texans currently sit third overall in the region with 872.50 points, while the Texans come in fourth in the region with 1,345 points.
