No. 1 Texans, No. 5 Lady Texans travel to Snyder Thursday to take on Western Texas College in WJCAC play


LEVELLAND — Following victories over New Mexico Junior College on Monday, the South Plains College men's and women's basketball teams will be on the road Thursday as they travel to Snyder to take on Western Texas College in WJCAC play.

The No. 5-ranked Lady Texans will tip at 5:45 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be streaming live at spctexans.com and Michael Wiiest of KLVT Radio Levelland will call the courtside action with pregame slated for 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Texans head into Thursday night following their biggest win of the year in their previous outing where they dominated the third-ranked Lady Thunderbirds 66-51 at the Texan Dome. South Plains has won 16 straight dating back to mid-November and are 19-1 on the year and 4-0 in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference.  

Sarah Shematsi led South Plains with 20 points against NMJC, knocking down 7 of 12 attempts from the floor and was 6 of 10 from the 3-point line to go along eight boards, four steals, and three assists. Gabbie Green recorded 16 points, four rebounds and three assists over 36 minutes while Germond netted 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists.

Western Texas will be looking to gain some sort of traction on Thursday, heading into the matchup with a 5-10 record and have lost seven of their previous eight games. The Lady Westerners are 1-3 in the WJCAC with their sole win coming in a 76-65 win over Clarendon College on Jan. 7.

The top-ranked Texans enter the contest with a 16-1 record on the year and a perfect 5-0 mark in conference play. South Plains is 4-1 in true road games this season and look to ride the momentum of Monday's 77-50 win over New Mexico Junior College.

Sophomore sharpshooter Jonah Antonio led all scorers with 21 points and four boards, dropping in 6 of 14 attempts from the field including six 3s in 31 minutes of action. Gaige Prim recorded 18 points, four rebounds and three assists, bucketing 7 of 8 attempts from the floor and was 4-for-6 from the charity stripe. South Plains' Trey Wade finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and five assist in 29 minutes of action while Chris Orlina chipped in 10 and Christian Wilson tallied six coming off the bench for the Texans.

Western Texas is 9-6 on the season and 1-3 in league play, with their sole win coming against NMJC on Jan. 10. The Westerners fell to Odessa 90-58 on Monday as they look to rebound after dropping two of their last three outings. Averaging 79.4 points per game and shooting just over 44 percent from the floor, Western Texas will be in search of their biggest win to date Thursday night.

Following the contest in Snyder, South Plains is off on Monday and will return to the hardwood on Thursday, Jan. 24 when the Texans and Lady Texans travel to Clarendon College, followed by a home matchup with Odessa College on Jan. 28 at the Texan Dome.
