No. 1 Texans, No. 8 Lady Texans set to host Howard Monday in WJCAC matchup at the Texan Dome

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men's and women's basketball teams will return to conference play on Monday when they host Howard College at the Texan Dome with the women's game slated for a 5:45 p.m. tip, followed by the men's game at 7:30.

Monday's WJCAC matchup will be streaming live at spctexans.com and Michael Wiiest of KLVT Radio Levelland will call the courtside action with pregame set for 5:30 p.m.

The top-ranked Texans bring a 13-1 record including a 2-0 mark in conference play into Monday night after going 3-1 over the Christmas break where they captured the 2018 Fiesta Bowl Junior College Shootout title in Mesa, AZ.

South Plains picked up three wins including an 89-85 victory over #7 Salt Lake before defeating Seward County 72-64 in the tournament finals on Dec. 29. The Texans would fall for the first time this season 88-86 against Scottsdale on Dec. 31 as they look to get back to their winning ways against the Hawks. Howard comes into Monday with a record of 9-3 and are 1-1 in the WJCAC, and hold wins over #6 Ranger College and took #15 Indian Hills into overtime on Nov. 16.

As winners of 14 straight, the No. 8-ranked Lady Texans showed no signs of slowing down over the holiday break as they went 3-0 at the Pima College Classic in Tucson Dec. 31-Jan. 2. South Plains defeated #23 Cochise College 62-60 in their opening contest before downing Arizona Western 70-51 on Tuesday and routed Pima College 68-57 on Wednesday to cap their road trip in the desert.

Currently 2-0 in the WJCAC, the Lady Texans will bring their relentless defensive attack to the Lady Hawks who are 6-8 on the year and 1-1 in conference play. Howard has dropped two of its last three including a 70-33 loss against New Mexico Junior College on Nov. 28.

Following Monday's games, the Texans will return to the hardwood on Jan. 10 in Roswell against New Mexico Military Institute at 7:30 p.m.
