Texans, Lady Texans travel to Borger Saturday for conference matchup with Frank Phillips

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men's and women's basketball teams are set to return to conference play on Saturday when they travel to Borger to take on Frank Phillips College.

The Lady Texans will tip at 2 p.m., followed by the men's game at 3:45 p.m. Both games will be streaming live at spctexans.com and Michael Wiiest of KLVT Radio Levelland will call the courtside action with pregame slated for 1:45 p.m. Live stats will also be available on the live stream.

The second-ranked Texans defeated Midland College 78-58 in their conference opener on Wednesday at the Texan Dome, improving to 9-0 on the season. Chris Orlina led all scorers with 18 points, six boards, four assists, and three steals as the Texans shot 47.5 percent from the floor.

Sophomore Gaige Prim netted 12 points for South Plains, sinking 5 of 10 attempts and also hauled in nine rebounds and dished out three assists. Jonah Antonio drained a pair of 3s as the 6-foot-5 sharpshooter from Australia tallied nine points for South Plains.

Shooting 47.2 percent from the field this season and averaging over 86 points per game, South Plains swept Frank Phillips last season. The Plainsmen come into Saturday's contest with a 9-3 record on the year and are 0-1 in the WJCAC after falling to Odessa 88-57 on Wednesday. Averaging 88 points per game and shooting 53.7 percent from the floor, Frank Phillips is led by sophomore guard Marcus Brown who leads the team in scoring with 14 points per game and is shooting 59.6 percent from the floor.

Ranked No. 15 in the country, the Lady Texans are riding an eight-game win streak and are 11-1 on the season and 1-0 in the WJCAC after defeating Midland 67-62 Wednesday at the Texan Dome. Sophomore Keke Hunter recorded her eighth double-double of the year against the Lady Chaparrals, netting 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Sarah Shematsi led all scorers with 18 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists while Caroline Germond scored 13 points and was 5 of 15 from the field and tallied four assists, four steals, and three rebounds. Gabbie Green finished with seven points, two boards and two assists and Chantel Govan provided six points coming off the bench for South Plains.

The Lady Plainsmen are 2-6 on the year and have lost three of their last four including an 86-29 loss to Odessa on Wednesday in their conference opener. Frank Phillips is shooting just 32.9 percent from the floor and averaging 59.9 points per game on the season.

The Texans will return to the hardwood on Dec. 27 against Central Arizona College at 4 p.m. MST at the 2018 Fiesta Bowl Junior College Shootout on the campus of Mesa Community College. The Lady Texans will host Connors State at 6 p.m. on Dec. 7, followed by a 2 p.m. tip against Hill College on Dec. 9 at the Texan Dome.
