Landon Steele named new assistant women's basketball coach

LEVELLAND — Landon Steele begins his first season as the assistant women's basketball coach at South Plains College under head coach Cayla Petree after serving as the head coach at Lamar Community Colleg for the past two seasons.

While at Lamar, coach Steele guided the program to 17-15 mark during his second season including a berth in the Region IX tournament. Prior to his time at Lamar, Steele served as the head coach of Northwest Kansas Technical College where he compiled an overall record of 29-31, leaving the school as the winningest coach in school history.  In his first year at NWKTC, the Mavericks finished with a record of 8-21, setting a school record for wins in a single season. During his second season at the helm, Steele guided the Mavericks to a new school record with 21 wins on the year as they finished the season 21-9.

Prior to his time at NWKTC, Steele served as the head coach for the girls' basketball team at Wallace County High School in Sharon Springs, Kansas.  During his six-year stint at WCHS, Steele amassed an overall record of 88-42 including two trips to the state tournament including a state championship in 2012.  In addition to winning the state title in 2012, he was also named the KBCA 1A Division II Coach of the Year and served as an assistant coach in the KBCA all-star game.
