South Plains track and field make strong showing on day one of Indoor National Championships in Lubbock

LUBBOCK — The South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams were business as usual on day one of the 2018 NJCAA Indoor National Championships Friday at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center.

The Lady Texans sit atop the point standings with 46 points, with Iowa Central sitting in second with 44 points and New Mexico Junior College in third with 33 points. The complete men's results were unavailable as of 11 p.m. on Friday. As soon as they become available, this story will be updated.

"I thought we had a solid day throughout and competed well today," South Plains head coach Erik Vance said. "We qualified who we needed to for the finals tomorrow, and our men's and women's teams picked up a good number of points and gave themselves a chance to be in contention tomorrow."

Sophomore Bisiboro Mosongo placed fifth overall in the women's pentathlon and set a new personal best with 3011 points after placing inside the top five in two events. Bosiboro placed second in the high jump with a final clearance of 5' 3.75", and earned a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 32' 11.75". Sophomore Leslie Romero tallied six more points for South Plains in the 5000 meters with a third place overall finish with her time of 18:19.07.

Romero added five more points for the Lady Texans in the women's 3000 meters with a fourth place overall finish with a final time of 10:32.19. Sophomore Cha'Kaylin Gilbert garnered six points for the orange and blue with her third-place finish with a mark of 19' 2" in the women's long jump.

"Leslie pulled off a gutsy performance with a third-place finish in the 5k and turned around and placed fourth in the 3k," Vance said. "That was her idea and she volunteered to do that and really came through for us today. Ruth and Cha'Kaylin went two-three which was a big pick up for us and were competitive throughout the competition and got up on the podium."
