Acosta drops career high 27 as Lady Texans win third straight, topping Frank Phillips 76-56 Monday

LEVELLAND — Yendrie Acosta scored a season-high 27 points as the South Plains College women's basketball team won its third straight game in conference play Monday with a 76-56 victory over Frank Phillips.

The Lady Texans will be on the road Thursday when they travel to Odessa for a 5:45 p.m. tip against the Lady Wranglers. The contest will stream live at spctexans.com.

"Yendrie had a really nice game and shot the ball well," South Plains head coach Ara Baten said. "She did a lot of good things for us tonight, and it was nice to see. Maya Woodson is a really talented player, and she's a true freshman, and if she can find some consistency and play at that high level, she can really help us. She gave us some great minutes tonight."

Acosta finished eight of 16 from the floor and was five of 8 from distance over 35 minutes. Bella Belong netted 13 points and grabbed six boards while Dabria Blackwell finished with 12 points and three rebounds.

Woodson tallied eight points, three rebounds, and three assists coming off the bench for South Plains, while Shcira Fowles added five points and seven boards over 21 minutes. The Lady Texans shot 41.7 percent from the floor in the contest and bucketed 10 of 21 3s.

South Plains forced 19 turnovers on the defensive end, which resulted in 27 points on the opposite end of the floor, and dropped in 21 points on second-chance opportunities. The Lady Texans controlled the interior, outscoring Frank Phillips 26-12 inside the paint, while also enjoying a 42-32 advantage on the glass in the contest.

"Frank Phillips is talented and can score a bunch of different ways, and I thought we did a really good job defensively tonight," Baten said. "We played hard, and there were a few times we didn't get our rotations taken care of, but overall I thought tonight we played well overall. We have been sharing the ball a lot better the past few games, and I'm proud of our kids for playing unselfish and playing together."
